How not to drive yourself up the wall when experiencing writers block

WE ALL NEED A LITTLE MOTIVATION SOMETIMES

A NOTE FROM THE EDITOR OLIVIA LEWIS-BROWN

Personally the reason I write is because I need too . Since I was a kid I was always better at observing people than I was at interacting with them. I found social situations challenging and never really fit in anywhere. Stories were a way for me to escape even at a young age, to create a world I felt comfortable living in if only for a little while because it was a world I understood where I knew the people who occupied this place as well as I knew myself.

There is a certain comfort in this profession. Knowing that what you produce has never been done by anyone else before is tantalising. Generating an idea and seeing it come to life on the page is an incredible experience and extremely satisfying.

Don't get me wrong writing a script or book can be one of the most liberating, rewarding experiences of your life and one of the most stressful things you will ever undertake. Seeing what's inside your own mind reflected back at you on paper can be daunting nevertheless allowing someone else to take a peek into your mental pathways. You will have to grow a thick skin, learn to love the writers block and know what you are doing this for in order to create your best work. If you want to do this you will find a way to keep your ideas flowing. Revel in the time you get to write because it is yours. So sit back, relax and enjoy the process.

0.1 IT TAKES MORE THAN TALENT TO BE A WRITER

Why are you writing in the first place? What motivates you? Are you writing to find truth or justice in your work? Maybe your writing to cleanse yourself of a personal story or you want to create a world to escape into so you can block out the outside world for a while.

0.2 DISCIPLINE WILL GET YOU FAR

Do you want to write for money? Hey man I got nothing against money. Are you writing for ego? There is nothing wrong with showcasing your skills. All I advise is that you discover what your doing this for before you start because this is where you will find your motivation through the times when you want to give up.

0.3 NOTHING WORTH DOING IS EASY

This profession is not easy. I'll say it again, THIS PROFESSION IS NOT EASY! If you don't have something driving you towards your goal you are going to fail no matter what. Writing professionally will take a toll on you mentally and in your personal life if you let it. Deadlines are strict, the market is competitive and funding for projects is limited. Without a clear motive you will lose motivation and soon your energy will spark out.

We know better than anyone that writing can be a wonderful place to escape to when you're feeling stressed or even under pressure. However writing can also be a challenge and if you work full time it's easy to lose your love and passion for writing along the road to becoming the creative you want to be. You may have had a few knock backs from producers or publishers, you may find that you want to write but are worried or scared about what others might think when reading your work.
